A Hull company established just 14 months ago is celebrating double success at local food and tourism award ceremonies.
Hotham’s Gin School and Distillery of Hepworth’s Arcade, Hull, picked up the Garbutt & Elliott Food Entrepreneur ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ Drink Award for their Hotham’s Cardamom Gin last week. Produced using traditional distilling methods, the gin impressed the panel of judges which included regional food experts like Deliciouslyorkshire, Made in Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Food Guide, and Yorkshire chef Steph Moon. Competition was so stiff that the award for ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ had to be split into three categories: savoury, sweet and drink.
Emma Kinton and Simon Pownall, directors and distillers at Hotham’s Ltd., received their award, sponsored by Deliciouslyorkshire, at York Castle Museum on 7th March, celebrating alongside the producers of the best of Yorkshire food and drink. The judges were impressed by the quality of the pair’s ‘amazing gin which truly stands out from the crowd’.
Only a week later, Hotham’s was thrilled to win the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award 2019 (REYTA19) for Remarkable Food Experience for their Hull-based Gin School, which has attracted visitors from as far afield as Brazil and New Zealand. The awards, which aim to recognise the best of the local tourism industry, saw fierce competition between record number of entries and 72 finalists on the night.
Simon said, “We were absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for these awards. We never expected our names to be read out as winners, with such a new business and given the standard of competition. Emma and I have worked so hard in building the business over the last twelve months - it’s fantastic to be recognised for all that hard work and we’re over the moon.”
The pair now plan to build upon their success by expanding into Trinity Market, where they have opened a bottle shop selling a range of Yorkshire spirits including their own three varieties of gin, and Hull’s first kombucha bar.
